Client Business

Becton Dickinson (often abbreviated as BD) is a global medical technology company with a presence in Heidelberg, Germany. The company focuses on advancing healthcare by developing innovative solutions in medical diagnostics, biosciences, and patient care technologies. BD’s Heidelberg operations support research, manufacturing, and distribution of medical instruments and laboratory equipment, helping hospitals, laboratories, and life science researchers improve safety, accuracy, and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

Challenges

The client faced a significant operational risk due to their reliance on a legacy, highly customized ERP system that had been in use for more than a decade. Over time, system documentation became scarce, and the internal knowledge required to maintain and operate the platform was concentrated in just one individual. This created a single point of failure—any disruption to that person’s availability could bring critical business processes to a halt.

Additionally, the outdated system limited scalability, integration with modern tools, and overall efficiency. The bespoke setup made it difficult to adopt industry best practices or implement new functionalities, leading to delays in decision-making and process bottlenecks. The organization needed a reliable and future-proof solution to reduce dependency on individuals and enable standardization across operations. Customer wished to transition from legal and bespoke ERP system to ECC. The system was running for over a decade and the know-how only limited to 1 person alone which created a lot of bottlenecks.

Why BCG solutions

To address these challenges, Bolders Consulting Group executed a structured migration strategy, beginning with the most critical component: manufacturing and production integration. In phase one, the bespoke ERP’s production execution module was successfully transitioned into SAP ECC, enabling the client to shift away from their high-risk legacy setup. The most complex aspect of the project involved reverse-engineering and interpreting the deeply customized processes within the old system. Due to the site-specific manufacturing model—shaped by unique product variations and stringent process controls—standard migration approaches were not sufficient. Bolders Consulting Group collaborated closely with on-site experts to decode the technical dependencies, map out the custom logic, and translate it into scalable ECC frameworks. This ensured a seamless transition while preserving essential operational nuances, laying the foundation for full ERP modernization.

Benefits

The technical solution delivered by Bolders Consulting Group provided substantial value. The successful replication and modernization of the production interface within SAP ECC proved that the client’s complex manufacturing processes could be fully standardized and scaled within a future-ready platform. This outcome not only validated the feasibility of transitioning away from the legacy system but also eliminated the dependency on a single knowledge holder. The organization now has a clearly defined blueprint for full ERP transformation, significantly reducing operational risk while enabling faster decision-making and long-term process sustainability.
