As of 2026, the grace period for one of the most widely used modules in SAP history is officially ending. For decades, SAP Warehouse Management (WM) served as the backbone of global logistics. However, with the rise of S/4HANA, the rules of the game have changed. If your organization is still running classic SAP WM, the next few months are the most critical in your supply chain roadmap. Here is the definitive guide to what happens now and what the future holds.

The Sunset of “Compatibility Mode”

For years, SAP allowed customers to run classic WM within S/4HANA under a “Compatibility Pack.” This was a temporary bridge meant to give businesses time to migrate. SAP originally set the expiration for December 31, 2025. However, in a final move to support lagging migrations, a one-time extension was granted until May 31, 2026.
After May 2026, classic SAP WM is officially “unsupported” on S/4HANA. This means no more legal updates, security patches, or technical bug fixes. Continuing to use it in its classic form may also lead to licensing compliance issues during your next SAP audit.

Option A: SAP Stock Room Management

If you have a small, manual warehouse and don’t want the complexity of a full migration, SAP introduced Stock Room Management. Think of this as “WM Lite” for S/4HANA.

What stays?

Stock Room Management is essentially the old WM code stripped of its more complex features. It allows you to keep:

  • Storage bin management and inventory at the bin level.
  • Basic goods receipt, goods issue, and stock transfers.
  • Classic Transfer Orders (TOs) and RF (Radio Frequency) connectivity.

What is GONE?

To use Stock Room Management, you must stop using several advanced WM components. If you rely on these, Stock Room is not an option:

  • WM-LSR: Interface to external warehouse control systems (automation).
  • WM-TRM: Task & Resource Management.
  • WM-VAS: Value-Added Services.
  • WM-YM: Yard Management.
  • WM-CD: Cross-Docking.

Option B: SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM)

This is SAP’s strategic “target architecture.” For any warehouse with automation, high volume, or complex picking strategies, EWM is the only way forward.

Deployment Flavors:

  1. Embedded EWM (Basic): Included in the S/4HANA core license. It covers most standard requirements and is more powerful than the old WM.+1
  2. Embedded EWM (Advanced): Requires an additional license but includes high-end features like Material Flow Systems (MFS), Labor Management, and Slotting.
  3. Decentralized EWM: Runs on a separate server to ensure the warehouse keeps moving even if the main ERP goes down for maintenance.

The Future is “Advanced”: SAP EWM

For any warehouse that involves automation, complex picking strategies, or high volumes, SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) is the only strategic path forward. By 2026, EWM has evolved from a complex “add-on” into a seamless, integrated component of S/4HANA.

Why 2026 is the Year of EWM:

  • Automation Orchestration: EWM is now the “brain” for multi-vendor robotics. In 2026, more warehouses are using EWM to direct Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and cobots directly.
  • Embedded vs. Decentralized: Most customers are now choosing Embedded EWM for a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), while high-volume “mission-critical” sites stick to Decentralized EWM to ensure the warehouse keeps moving even if the main ERP goes down for maintenance.
  • AI-Driven Logistics: The 2026 version of EWM leverages SAP Joule (AI assistant) to predict bottlenecks before they happen and suggest “re-slotting” for faster picking.

Migration Strategies: Bluefield vs. Greenfield

As we approach the 2027 end-of-life for SAP ECC, most companies in 2026 are opting for a Bluefield (Selective Data Transition) approach. It allows you to keep your historical data but “clean the core” by moving your old WM processes into modern EWM structures without a total “start from scratch” (Greenfield) implementation.

What should you do?

If you are still on classic SAP WM today, the “wait and see” period is over.

  • If you are a simple warehouse: Shift to Stock Room Management before the May 2026 deadline. It’s a low-effort “technical” change that keeps you compliant.
  • If you need growth or automation: Start your EWM migration project immediately. EWM is a different beast—it requires a rethink of your processes and data structures, but it is the only platform that will receive SAP’s innovations (like AI-driven picking and Fiori apps) moving forward.
